A major international cycling event will pass through Torfaen on Sunday 14 June.
The Wales Velothon has been secured by the Welsh Government and will see 15,000 riders taking part in a closed-road cycling event across south-east Wales. The event allows cycling enthusiasts to participate in the same race as world class athletes.
The race starts in Cardiff before travelling through Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen and Caerphilly, and finishes back in Cardiff city centre. Cyclists will travel up the Tumble from Monmouthshire, passing through Blaenavon and Pontypool towards Caerphilly and back to Cardiff.
During the event the highway network from Blaenavon to Pontypool will be directly affected with full road closures, including side roads, along with the main routes into the county from Caerphilly and Monmouthshire.
Residents in the vicinity of the route should prepare for disruption on the day for around 10 hours and plan ahead for the day.
The organisers are working closely with councils to minimise disruption to local communities wherever possible and have been contacting local businesses directly. .
Provision is being made for residents who receive care services in their homes and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
A number of cycling groups from Torfaen are signed up to the event and this will be an excellent opportunity to watch some of the world’s elite cyclists pass through the county and cheer on home grown talent on their own turf.
