Former boxer Sugar Ray Leonard stopped in at the Parkway Hotel & Spa in Cwmbran to speak to guests at the Boxing Dinner of the Year event.
Leonard won world titles in five weight divisions and defeated fellow International Boxing Hall of Fame inductees Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran & Marvin Hagler.
He also went on to become the first boxer to earn more than $100 million. Guests enjoyed a three-course dinner in the Crystal Suite, heard tales from boxing’s golden era & took part in a raffle & auction where prizes included signed shorts, gloves & prints from the former prize fighter’s bouts.
Kerry Jennings, General Manager of the Parkway Hotel & Spa says guests were spellbound by Sugar Ray. She said ‘We had nearly 300 people here and it was an excellent evening. He was on a UK tour and boxing fans could not have been more thrilled to have been in his company and heard such fascinating stories in such a captivating way and told with such humour.’ This event builds on the success of past dinners. Last year Frank Bruno visited the hotel as well as Welsh rugby captain Sam Warburton. On 10th September, New Zealand rugby legend Jonah Lomu will appear.
