An entrepreneur from Abersychan has opened a new tea room in Garndiffaith, offering customers home cooked meals, Sunday lunches, cakes and afternoon teas.

Mandy Robinson of Pentwyn opened Truly Scrumptious on Stanley Road in May, and it is already proving to be a hit with the local community.

The tea room is currently open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and customers can take advantage of free wifi access.

Mandy, who has worked in the catering industry for 40 years, also works four days a week as a canteen supervisor at BAE Systems in Glascoed, but starting her own business has always been her ultimate goal.

She said: “I have always wanted to be my own boss and with my children now grown up now seemed like the right time. The reaction from the public has been fantastic – I already have my regulars and have had my first request to open for a private event in the evening. People are surprised to find me here but when they do they keep coming back for more.”

Mandy currently employs three people on a part time basis and hopes to open for more days during the week in the near future.

She was supported in setting up the business by Torfaen EFFECT, a panel of volunteers drawn from the local businesses community, voluntary organisations and the public sector, who give up their own time to support new businesses with free, confidential business support and advice. Torfaen EFFECT is funded by Welsh Government.

She said: “I knew I had the skills to run a tea room but really needed support when it came to finding a premises and looking for financial support.

“Fortunately my local councillor put me in touch with Torfaen EFFECT which helped me negotiate the planning requirements needed to turn the old community hall in Garndiffaith into a tea room. I was also given support to help develop a logo and brand, and most importantly for me was knowing that there was someone at the end of the phone I could call for advice.”

Jayne Skryme, Enterprise Facilitator for Torfaen EFFECT, said: “Mandy had the passion and the skills needed to start her own business, she just needed some support with complex issues like planning regulations and grant applications.

“Torfaen EFFECT aims to harness the skills of the local community in Torfaen to support entrepreneurs and new businesses start-ups to develop their ideas, set up their businesses and help them to grow.

“ We would urge anyone out there with a business idea they want to explore to get in touch with me and we can have a chat and see how we may be able to help.”
